I’ve been seeking the Lord for the longest time over a path that I’m currently taking and whether it is the right path for me. I’ve asked for wisdom repeatedly and direction but unfortunately, no burning bushes appeared on my way to work nor any giant fish coming after me. God seemed to be content allowing my own wisdom to determine the path that I should take.

However, today, I was given a very apt reminder of what the Bible speaks about wisdom. It is found in Proverbs 2:

“My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And life up your voice for understanding,
If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;
He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk uprightly;”

Proverbs 2:1-7

Here it seems to me that God has promised us that if we follow everything from v1-4, God guarantees that we will find the fear of the Lord and thus, find wisdom (Pro 1:7). Perhaps, the reason why we sometimes do not receive the wisdom of God is perhaps because we have failed in one aspect or another from v1-4? Perhaps.

But apart from looking at the glass half-empty, we can also be assured that if we are trying our best to follow the commands and instructions given, then wisdom is already granted, whether or not you hear an audible and obvious voice of God! God can be leading you through a myriad of ways that we cannot even begin to imagine, and perhaps we are already walking in the wisdom of God through the Holy Spirit working on our intellect and understanding.

So if you are like me, searching for wisdom on major decisions and plans, take heart that our loving Father will never abandon us to our own destructive ways if we earnestly follow the instructions on His holy ‘instructions manual’. Knowing that, let’s be eager to read God’s words and treasure His commands within us.
